Do Lasers work to treat periodontal disease? Why would I want surgery?

Yes, lasers work, but they have not been proven to provide the long term stability of alternative surgical therapies.  The most recent review commissioned by the American Academy of Periodontology found that the use of an Nd:YAG, or Er:YAG laser to treat periodontal disease was about as effective as a deep cleaning.  (http://www.perio.org/resources-products/pdf/lr-lasers.pdf)

Therefore at this time Carolina Periodontics & Endodontics does not utilize a laser to treat periodontal disease because its use is not based in long term evidence.  In coming years, additional results may be reported to confirm long-term stability, and at that time we will begin to use it in our therapy regimen.
