Carolina Periodontics & Endodontics
Periodontist? Endodontist? Why not Both!

What is a "cracked tooth", and what are my options?

Many times the reason behind tooth pain can be due to the fact that the tooth has experienced a crack under the normal chewing forces in your mouth.  Many times this can be due to previous loss of tooth structure resulting in the current restoration placing excess forces on the root/tooth.

At Carolina Periodontics & Endodontics we use a microscope on all patients undergoing root canal therapy from start to finish in order to visualize any cracks that are present that may not be visible under normal circumstances.

Cracks limited to the portion of the tooth outside of the gums can often be corrected by having a crown hold the tooth together, cracks that extend onto the root require extraction and then can be replaced by an implant, bridge, or partial.

At Carolina Periodontics & Endodontics we provide the unique opportunity of having two specialists within one practice.  This means that if your tooth is found to have a crack in it, you can have it removed at that time, have the site prepared for an implant if you wish, and even possibly have the implant placed.  All of these procedures can be performed in one chair, without having to be numbed again, or having to go through the hassle of making more appointments and taking more time off of work.
